Ben Robert Gilden — About the Artist

I am Ben Robert Gilden, a 25-year-old Māori artist based in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa (New Zealand). Born in Wellington, I graduated from ARA with a Bachelor of Design in Applied Visual Arts. My practice moves between contemporary color painting, mixed-media collage, and large-scale installations, focusing intensely on human and animal portraiture driven by narratives and archetypes.

I came to my work through myth-making and the philosophy of perception. Inspired by William Blake’s moral urgency, Gustave Doré's intense illustrative power, and Paul Cézanne’s geometric structures, I began treating art not as decoration but as a visual cosmology. My overarching thematic focus, Primal Resonance, explores how we physically perceive these structures, drawing heavily on the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Archetypes provide the grammar: the Hero, the Shadow, the Lover, the Trickster. I take those forms, loosen them, and remix them through collage and vibrant pigment until new figures emerge—personal gods for contemporary interiors.

Philosophy in practice:

• Archetype as toolkit: I don’t copy myths; I translate their energies. Archetypes become compositional motifs, color systems, and narrative cues that readers of a wall can decode instantly.

• Vision as utility: Art must alter behavior and mood. A painting should catalyze focus in a workspace, provoke conversation in a lobby, and hold intimacy in a living room.

• Craft as promise: Museum-grade finish means rigor at every step—from pigment selection and mixed-media layering to substrate engineering and archival framing—so boldness never compromises longevity.
